What is fingerspelling?

Fingerspelling uses a manual alphabet to represent written letters with handshapes. It is often used for names, places and words without an established sign.

Is BSL fingerspelling the same as ASL fingerspelling?

No. British Sign Language and American Sign Language use different manual alphabets. BSL fingerspelling is commonly two-handed, while ASL fingerspelling is one-handed.

Does SignMyWord translate English into sign language?

No. SignMyWord shows fingerspelling letter by letter. It does not translate English sentences into BSL or ASL grammar and it does not replace a sign-language dictionary or interpreter.

Can I use SignMyWord to fingerspell a name?
